Power sanders are only as good as the paper that is being used with them. The fastest sander in the world will still not remove enough material if the paper grit is too fine. Choosing the right grit, or progression of grits, for a job is essential to finishing the job correctly.
For large amounts of material removal, a lower grit number sand paper should be chosen. Numbers that are assigned to each type denote the roughness of the paper. A 50 grit sheet of paper roughly resembles gravel glued on to a thin piece of cardboard and should be used only when doing very rough sanding.
Medium grade sand paper ranges from about 100 grit to 220 grit. The higher grits are perfect for sanding down a piece to prepare it for finish sanding with an even higher grit. These grits will remove enough material without leaving deep sanding marks, making the finish sanding easy.
Power Sander
The finish grits increase in number from 220 and are intended to remove very little material because they are generally used to smooth the material and remove the final sanding marks left behind. Power sanders will leave almost a perfectly smooth finish when these higher grits are used. This is the final step in sanding when refinishing a table or other piece of furniture.
Power sanders aid the user in completing the project much faster than hand sanding and they do a more even job. The right paper makes all the difference when using one of these sanders. The lower the grit, the more material that is removed, so care should be taken when making the paper selection.
